Shopify Customer Lifetime Value (LTV): How to Calculate and Actually Use It

Customer lifetime value gets thrown around constantly in e-commerce, but a lot of stores either never calculate it or calculate it in a way that's disconnected from any actual decision. Here's a simpler, more practical way to think about it.

The Simple Version

At the most basic level: LTV = Average Order Value × Average Purchase Frequency × Average Customer Lifespan. You don't need a data science degree to get a useful number — you need accurate order history, which Shopify already has.

Historical LTV vs. Predictive LTV

Historical LTV looks backward: what has this customer actually spent so far? It's simple, accurate, and immediately usable. Predictive LTV tries to forecast future spend using statistical models — more sophisticated, but also more assumption-dependent. Most growing stores get more practical value starting with historical LTV, segmented by acquisition channel or customer segment, before investing in predictive modeling.

Where LTV Actually Changes Decisions

The real value of LTV isn't the number itself — it's using it to answer: how much can we afford to spend acquiring a customer through a given channel? If Instagram-acquired customers have a historical LTV of $180 and Google-acquired customers have $95, that should directly influence your acquisition budget allocation, not just your reporting deck.

"We were spending almost the same on two channels because they had similar CPA. Once we looked at LTV by channel, one was clearly worth 40% more per customer over a year — we reallocated budget the same week."

LTV and RFM Are Two Sides of the Same Coin

RFM segmentation tells you a customer's current status — Champion, Loyal, At Risk. Lifetime value tells you their total historical worth. A Champion with high LTV is your most protectable relationship; a Lost customer with high historical LTV is worth a dedicated win-back attempt before you write them off. Looking at both together, calculated from the same real order data, gives a far more actionable customer view than either metric alone.

Getting There Without Manual Spreadsheet Work

Every input LTV needs — order value, order frequency, customer tenure — already lives in your Shopify order history. The report builder's Customer entity includes total spend and order count per customer directly, which is most of the calculation without opening a spreadsheet.
