Shopify Inventory Value Report: How to Track Stock Worth

Inventory sitting on a shelf is capital, not just stock — and knowing its dollar value matters for cash flow, insurance, and accounting. Shopify tracks quantity well; value takes an extra step.

Step 1: Check Quantity-Based Inventory Reports

Analytics → Reports → Inventory shows quantity on hand, available, and committed per product or variant. This is accurate and native, but it's a unit count, not a dollar figure.

Step 2: Add Cost Data

To turn quantity into value, each variant needs a Cost per item set (Products → variant → Pricing). Without this field populated, there's no native way for Shopify to calculate what your stock is actually worth.

Step 3: Calculate Value Manually

Shopify doesn't have a single native report that multiplies quantity on hand by cost per item to show total inventory value. The most direct native path is exporting your inventory and cost data, then calculating value = quantity × cost per item yourself in a spreadsheet.

Where This Falls Short

There's no built-in dashboard tile for total inventory value, no trend view showing whether tied-up capital is growing or shrinking, and the manual export-and-calculate process needs to be repeated every time you want an updated number.

The SnapDash Alternative

SnapDash's Inventory report template and dashboard widgets pull quantity and cost fields together automatically, so a value-based view doesn't require a manual export-and-multiply step each time. See our Shopify inventory analytics guide for the full set of stock metrics worth tracking alongside value.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Shopify's native inventory reports show quantity — on hand, available, committed — but there's no single report that multiplies quantity by cost to show total dollar value.

'On hand' is the total physical quantity at a location. 'Available' is on-hand quantity minus anything already committed to unfulfilled orders — the number that reflects what you can actually sell right now.

Export your inventory quantities and cost-per-item data, then multiply quantity by cost per variant and sum the result. A report builder that can combine both fields automatically removes the manual export step.
