"Which products actually drive our revenue?" sounds like a simple question, and Shopify does have a report for it. The step-by-step is straightforward — the limitations show up once you want to slice that data any further than the default view allows.
Step 1: Open the Sales by Product Report
In Shopify Admin, go to Analytics → Reports and open the Sales by product report. On entry-level plans, some report types — including this one — may not be available; fuller reporting is included on higher-tier Shopify plans.
Step 2: Set Your Date Range
Choose the period you want to analyze — this week, last month, a custom range. The report recalculates gross sales, net sales, and units sold per product for whatever range you select.
Step 3: Read the Columns
The default view shows product title, units sold, gross sales, discounts, returns, and net sales. Sort by net sales to find your actual top performers, not just your highest unit-volume products — those aren't always the same thing.
Step 4: Export If You Need to Share It
Use the export option to download a CSV for anyone who needs the raw numbers outside Shopify Admin.
Where the Native Report Falls Short
Three limitations show up quickly: you can't filter by product category, vendor, or tag alongside the sales columns in one view; you can't cross-reference this with which customer segment bought which product; and there's no way to schedule the report to arrive in your inbox automatically every week.
The SnapDash Alternative
SnapDash's no-code report builder starts from the same idea — sales by product — but lets you filter by category, vendor, or tag, group and aggregate however you need, and save the report so it's ready with current data any time, no manual re-export required.
