How to Build Custom Reports in Shopify

How to Build Custom Reports in Shopify

Shopify Admin has a genuine custom report feature — it's just narrower than "custom" usually implies. Here's how to actually use it, step by step.

Step 1: Start From a Base Report Type

In Analytics → Reports, select Create custom report and choose a base type — Sales, Orders, Products, or another available category. Every custom report in Shopify starts from one of these fixed foundations; you can't blend two base types into one report.

Step 2: Add or Remove Columns

Choose which fields to display from the columns available for that base type. This is where most of the actual customization happens — trimming down to just what you need, or adding a dimension the default report didn't show.

Step 3: Apply Filters and Sort

Filter by the available fields (date range, product, order status, and similar) and set a sort order, then save the report under Custom reports for reuse later.

Where This Falls Short

The base report type is a hard boundary — you can't combine order data with customer segment data in a single custom report, there's no aggregation function like sum-by-group beyond what the base type already provides, and there's no native way to schedule the report to email automatically on a recurring basis.

The SnapDash Alternative

SnapDash's report builder works more like a spreadsheet than a fixed template: pick an entity, choose from 24 available fields, filter, sort, and group with aggregation (Sum, Average, Min, Max, Count), then export to CSV, Excel, or PDF. For a deeper look at exactly what's possible natively versus what needs a dedicated builder, see our guide to Shopify custom reports.

Frequently Asked Questions

Custom report creation is included on higher-tier Shopify plans. Check Analytics → Reports in your Admin to see if the Create custom report option is available on your current plan.

No — Shopify's custom reports start from a single base report type (Sales, Orders, Products, etc.) and can't blend fields across different entity types in one report.

Not natively. Shopify's custom reports are viewed and exported on demand; recurring, automated delivery requires a separate tool or automation rule.
