RFM segmentation groups customers by recency, frequency, and monetary value into named segments. Here are the eight most common ones and what to actually do with each — the segment name is only useful if it maps to an action.
1. Champions
Bought recently, buy often, spend the most. Action: reward them — early access, recognition, never a heavy discount they don't need.
2. Loyal Customers
Buy regularly but with slightly lower recency or spend than Champions. Action: upsell and cross-sell — they trust you already, so a relevant recommendation converts well.
3. Promising
Recent customers with above-average spend but not yet frequent. Action: a second-purchase incentive — this segment is deciding right now whether you're a one-time purchase or a repeat habit.
4. New Customers
Bought once, recently. Action: a welcome sequence and onboarding content — the goal is converting them into Promising, then Loyal.
5. At Risk
Used to buy frequently but haven't purchased in a while. Action: a targeted win-back campaign now, before they slide into Lost — this is the highest-leverage segment to catch early.
6. Need Attention
Above-average recency, frequency, and spend, but trending down. Action: a check-in, not necessarily a discount — often a service or product issue is worth surfacing directly.
7. Can't Lose Them
High spenders who haven't purchased recently. Action: a personal, high-touch outreach — the potential revenue loss here is large enough to justify more than an automated email.
8. Lost
Lowest recency, frequency, and spend. Action: a low-cost reactivation attempt, and otherwise exclude from regular marketing spend — chasing this segment aggressively rarely pays for itself.
"Naming the segments changed how the team talked about customers. 'At Risk' became a category someone owned, instead of an abstract churn number nobody was responsible for."
